DRAFT Agenda

NCSM Coaching Committee

December 17, 18, 2015

The Forum

McDaniel College

December 17, 2015

Introductions: ems&tl team, Donna Karsten and NCSM team, Participants (by leaders)

Greetings: Dr. Mike Tyler, Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies, McDaniel College

Purpose

Outcomes

Part I: Needs Assessment: We are here to learn from you!

     A. What will coaching look like in 2025? (Desired state)

     B. What role does NCSM play in your professional practice? (Current reality)

     C. How could NCSM better support you in the coaching role? (Bridging plan)

(Community/network, professional learning, resources, tools, etc.?)

Activity A: (What can we envision for 2025?)

  1. Form groups of 4 (not by grade band or building)

               a. Focus Question 1: What will coaching look like in 2025?

               b. Focus Question 2: What might coaching support look like in 2025?

       2.  Use an activity to create a shared public record of the thoughts generated in answering the focus

             questions.

Activity B: (Where are we in 2015?)

  1. Partner each person (with someone from the same grade band) to discuss what they saw and what they thought about when exploring the resources on Coaching Corner.
  2. Critical Friends Protocol:

          a. Describe norms for the activity (feedback should be critical, but actionable)

          b. Pair up the pairs (groups of 4) and reframe the discussion around, "This is what we have currently in

the way of support. We are asking for your feedback on the 'current reality' of NCSM's role in your

               practice."

          c. Structure this as a gallery walk. Have each group create a poster with their thoughts concerning the

              following prompts:

    1. “I like . . .” - this section contains a list of remarks about what the group liked in what they saw
    2. “I wonder . . .” - this section is a place for feedback, for concerns about the resources,
    3. “What if we . . .” this section reflects ideas for suggested changes and refinements

         d. After the posters are complete, rotate the groups so that each group gets to spend two

minutes at each poster. During this time they can:

    1. Respond to a comment via Post-it note (agree/disagree, explain)
    2. Take a comment back (to be added to group poster)

Activity C: Planning - (Bridging from 2015 to 2025)

  1. Given your discussions from the first two activities, what would you need to get from B (Current reality) to A (Desired state)?

          a. In grade band groups, devise a plan to move us from current reality (2015) to desired reality

(2020). Talk specifically about what is needed in terms of resources, expertise, support,

community, and any other areas you can think of.

             b. Share out one idea per table. (Try not to repeat an idea that another table group has shared.)

Part II: “It Worked” Stories

  1. Form groups of 5 (random selection). Group sharing time: 2 minutes per person.
  2. Discussion:

               a. What were the common elements among your stories?

               b. What were some unique elements that you heard?

               c. What adjustments would you like to make to your story, if anything?

        3. Whole group focus discussion: What elements of a story make it compelling?  What about a two

minute story makes people want to hear it?

       4. With any time left, participants can update or change their stories based on the results of the

           discussion.

Facilitator Homework: We will take the results from Part A and create a draft plan to better align NCSM’s resources to support coaching. To be validated on Friday.
