6.    Assessment – what’s important

a.     How are you assessed?

- Howard - by the principal annually in conjunction with input by the supervisor (collaborative project/portfolio, coaching, observation, etc. depending on evaluation timeline)

- Baltimore - central office-based (supervisor) instructional coaches are assessed differently

- Carroll - by supervisor and principal (See indicators and forms below)

- Frederick - by supervisor; collaborative project/portfolio, observation, etc. depending on evaluation timeline

b.     How would you like to be assessed?

Would prefer to be evaluated by supervisor (sometimes conflict between philosophy); form should reflect job description;

c.     Length and format of the assessment? Frequency?

Renewal for certification every five years--need to be evaluated twice within a five year period.

d.     By whom? (supervisor, principal, school-based faculty)

School based faculty are surveyed by supervisors; specialists survey teachers directly (Sometimes the responses you get can be less than reliable.).

e.      Need for an instrument?

Written narrative feedback gathered throughout the school year (versus the end of the year) can be valuable; could also be a self reflection on the professional development provided. Negative reflections (shared only with the specialist) can be valuable in developing plans for future support.
